Suarez earns another RRAC weekly honor

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Nereo Suarez was announced Tuesday as Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for March 6-12. It's the second award in a row and the third in four weeks for Suarez, a freshman from Santa Fe, Argentina.
Suarez and Jacobi Bain won their No. 1 doubles match 6-3 Saturday against Ave Maria's Gustavo Cruz and Luca Cirenza of Ave Maria. Suarez led Carlos Thireau 6-3, 6-7 (6-7), 2-0 at No. 4 singles when the Gyrenes, ranked 13th in the NAIA, clinched a 4-0 team decision.
It's the sixth straight week that the Gold Rush won the RRAC award. Bain, Mathieu Strauss and Julius Hell also contributed to the streak.
The Gold Rush are 10-4 and ranked eighth in the NAIA. Next for XULA will be men's and women's home matches at 3 p.m. CDT Thursday against city rival Dillard at XULA Tennis Center.
