NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana women's track and field set more Red River Athletic Conference Championships scoring records and cruised to its third consecutive RRAC team title Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium.
XULA scored 392 points, 83 more than its RRAC record of a year ago. The Gold Nuggets' winning margin was 246 points, more than doubling the 2002 record of 112 by former member Northwood (Texas) in 2002.
Huston-Tillotson scored 146 points and placed second for the first time since 2010.
XULA joined former members Langston (five straight from 2007-11) and Wiley (three straight from 2015-17) as the only RRAC women's teams to win three-or-more consecutive titles. But the Gold Nuggets' dominance began before they joined the RRAC in July 2021 — overall they've won seven straight conference titles (Gulf Coast 2021, 2019, 2018, 2017) and 10 in their last 11 attempts. The streaks do not include 2020, when a pandemic halted all U.S. college sports in mid-March.
XULA won 8-of-9 events Friday and 6-of-11 Saturday. The Gold Nuggets' final-day champions were
Kynnedy Turner in the 100-meter dash (11.82 seconds),
Jaelyn Mitchell in the 200 (24.35),
Jade Harris in the 400 hurdles (1:05.62),
Skylah Barton in the 1,500 (5:49.91),
Elise Adams in the hammer (36.00 meters/118 feet, 1 inch) and
Kahdijah Bailey in the high jump (1.65/5-5).
Overall Barton won three individual events, and Adams, Bailey, Harris and Turner won two apiece.
Women's high-point awards went to Barton (track) with 40.5 points and Adams (field) with 33. Barton led all athletes, female or male, in scoring.
XULA's second-day qualifying marks for NAIA nationals were:
       • Bailey in the high jump (B-mark, 1.65 meters/5 feet, 5 inches)
       • Turner (A-mark) and Mitchell (B-mark, 11.87) in the 100
       • Mitchell (A-mark) and Turner (A-mark, 24.63) in the 200
XULA's Yhann Plummer repeated as RRAC Coach of the Year.
