MARION, Ind. — Kynnedy Turner broke her Xavier University of Louisiana record in the 200-meter dash Wednesday in the preliminaries of NAIA outdoor track and field nationals.
Turner — a junior athletically and the recipient of a XULA bachelor's degree 11 days ago — produced a record time of 23.99 seconds but did not qualify for Thursday's final. She was 11th out of 31 sprinters; the ninth and final spot went to Indiana Tech's Jamaya Warthen at 23.77.
Twelfth in the 200 prelims was XULA freshman Jaelyn Mitchell, whose 24.06 matched Turner's previous school record from the prelims of 2023 NAIA nationals. XULA's other 200 entry, freshman Nevaeh Lacey, was 29th in 24.71.
The Gold Nuggets advanced to Saturday's 400-meter relay final. Hannah Stoutmire, Lacey, Mitchell and Turner had the eighth-best qualifying time, 46.38.
Competing Thursday for the Gold Nuggets in preliminary races will be Kylar Coleman, Jade Harris and Leojai Hibbert in the 100 hurdles, Turner in the 100, Fedjine Bell in the 400 and the 1,600 relay team of Bell, Mitchell, Vanessa Oladapo and Turner. Kahdijah Bailey will compete in the triple jump.
