HOOVER, Ala. - The Xavier women's track team showed it could hang with teams of any size Saturday at the Samford Bulldog Open, where the team won one event and showed well in numerous others.
The Gold Nuggets claimed first in the 4X400 relay, as the quartet of Charieon Doxley, Jaelyn Mitchel, Rochelle Jeffries, and Tori Robinson-Thomas outran representatives of Clayton State, Rhodes, Meridian Community College, and Berry.
XULA's time of 4:02.30 ranked 25th best in the NAIA and 30th best in HBCU track this season.
Robinson-Thomas was the unquestioned star of the meet for Xavier. In addition to running anchor for the 4X400 team, she also placed 4th in the high jump with a 5-foot-1 effort and 7th in the shotput with a best throw of 11.51 meters.
Doxley was another multi-event standout, placing 4th the long jump with a 17-foot-7 effort.
Sprinter Breanna Clark took 6th in the 60-meter sprint with a 7.72 and 8th in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.38.
Among the other top performers for Xavier were Leojai Hibbert, who also cleared 5-foot-1, but placed 7th on misses in the high jump; Damysia Walls, who was 4th in the shotput with a best throw of 11.83 meters; Jordyn Hentz, who logged a 7th-place finish in the triple jump with a 10.55-meter attempt; and Charity Johnson, who was 7th in the weight throw with a best effort of 13.93 meters.
Next up for XULA will be the Southern States Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 20 and 21 in Gainesville, Florida, at the Alachua County Sports & Events Center.
