Women's Track dominates Day 1 of RRAC Outdoor Championships

NEW ORLEANS - The Gold Nuggets made a statement on Day 1 of the RRAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, claiming 127 points and more than doubling their next-closest competitor en route to first place in the team competition.

The likelihood of a XULA conference title is strong, as second-place Texas A&M Texarkana has 60 points and is projected to finish with 147 total points, and third-place Our Lady of the Lake currently has 56 points and is projected to finish with 154.

By comparison, the Gold Nuggets are projected to earn 300 points by the end of the meet, which concludes Saturday in Tad Gormlet Stadium. The first event begins at 10 a.m.

All told, the Xavier women claimed 10 medals on the day - four gold, four silver, and two bronze - and one team and two individuals posted national-qualifying results.

The most impressive showing of the day came from the Gold Nuggets' 4X100-meter relay team of Jordan Blair, Breanna Clarke, Rochelle Jeffries, and Jaelyn Mitchell, who claimed gold with a time of 46.88 seconds, well below the NAIA national meet qualification standard and the 16th-best time in the nation this season. Nearly a full second ahead of 2nd place.

Jeffries had an incredible day. Beyond her contributions to the relay, she also took gold in the 100-meter hurdles and bronze in the 400.

Xavier was dominant in the 100 hurdles, claiming four of the top five spots. Jeffries won with a 14.01, just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of her teammate Charieon Doxley. Both Jeffries' and Doxley's times were comfortably below the NAIA "B" qualifying standard of 14.19. Jade Harris, already a qualifier for the national meet, took 4th, and Tori Robinson-Thomas 5th.

In the other Friday relay, the 4X800, the team of Chris-Ann Edwards, Kayla Garrett, Jayda Love, and Mahlia Jules took silver with a run of 10:11.21.

When it came to the field events, the Gold Nuggets showed a tendency to collect podium spots.

XULA took four of the top five spots in the javelin, including a gold for Damysia Walls (29.27 meters) and silver for Leojai Hibbert (29.02). Robinson-Thomas and Cailyn Riley took 4th and 5th, respectively.

London Provo and Texas A&M Texarkana's Vinae Edwards shared gold in the triple jump with an 11.31-meter jump. Jordyn Hentz won bronze with a 10.99-meter jump.

Early in the day, Charity Johnson started Xavier's medal haul with a silver in the discus.
