Make in 9! Gold Nuggets continue conference title streak

NEW ORLEANS - For the 9th consecutive year and 12th of the last 13, the Xavier women's track and field team can claim the title of conference champion. Saturday, the Gold Nuggets dominated the second day of the RRAC Championships to win the Red River Athletic Conference title.

XULA, which has competed in the RRAC track and field ranks for five years, has never failed to win the conference title. Saturday was a demonstrative statement.

The Gold Nuggets, who entered the day 60 points ahead of second place, were already in the driver's seat for a conference title, but Saturday, they took little time in putting the meet essentially out of reach for the rest of the field.

In the second event of the day, Xavier swept the medals in the hammer throw with Charity Johnson taking gold (37.94 meters), Olushola Jegede silver (35.07), and Cailyn Riley bronze (34.19), which put XULA 89 points ahead of second-place.

From there, the championship became not a matter of if the Gold Nuggets would win but how many medals they'd collect along the way. In the end, Xavier scored 294 points, almost 150 points better than second-place Our Lady of the Lake, which scored 148.

As to the medal total, XULA's Saturday haul was 14 - 4 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze. And a member of the team also took home the biggest individual prize.

Rochelle Jeffriess was named women's meet MVP after scoring  37 points in an incredible seven events in which she participated. Jeffries never finished lower than fifth place in any of her events, and she brought home 3 golds, a silver, and a bronze.

Similar to the hammer throw, XULA also swept the medals in the shot put, with Damysia Walls earning gold with a best throw of 12.29 meters. Leojai Hibbert took silver with an 11.54-meter effort, and Tori Robinson-Thomas got bronze with an 11.43-meter throw.

Hibbert had a productive meet, as well, taking silver in the high jump with a 5-foot-3 clearance.

London Provo capped the team's medals in the field events with a bronze in the long jump with an NAIA top-100 jump of 5.36 meters. The Gold Nuggets also took 4th-6th place with Charieon Doxley, Jeffries, and Robinson-Thomas checking in behind Provo.

In the running events, freshman Chris-Ann Edwards was the gold medalist in the 800 with a run of 2:19.10. Kayla Garrett was fourth in the event with a 2:25.02 run.

Jeffries took silver in the 100 with an NAIA top-100 run of 12.35, with Provo claiming bronze with a 12.42.

The 4X400 relay team of Jordan Blair, Doxley,  Jeffries, and Robinson-Thomas won gold in a time of 3:58.15, and the Gold Nuggets went 2-4 in the 400-meter hurdles with Doxley (1:03.75) claiming silver and Robinson-Thomas (1:04.26) bronze. Jade Harris was fourth with a run of 1:04.45.

The meet results are available on the AthleticLive website.

Xavier will next host its Last Chance Meet on Friday, May 8, in Tad Gormley, with the NAIA National Championships to follow on May 20 and 21.
