Nuggets sweep GCAC honors, take aim at outright title Saturday

NEW ORLEANS — For the third time this season, Xavier University of Louisiana has swept the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference weekly volleyball awards. Ema Causevic is Attacker of the Week, Eva Le Guillou is Setter of the Week, and Jennifer Torres is Defender of the Week for Oct. 21-27.
The Gold Nuggets (24-5, 11-0) would win the GCAC regular-season championship outright as the result of a XULA victory or a Dillard loss during group play Saturday at Dillard's Dent Hall. XULA will play Rust at 1 p.m. and Philander Smith at 4 p.m.; Dillard will play Philander Smith at 11 a.m. and Rust at 6 p.m. Students will be admitted free with a valid XULA ID.
Causevic, a junior from Ravenna, Italy, hit .244 with 20 kills, three blocks, two digs and one ace during road victories this past weekend against Bethel (Tenn.) and William Carey. Her 13 kills against Carey were a match high and her second-most in a match this season.
Through matches of Oct. 26, Causevic is one of just three individuals in the NAIA with at least 200 kills, 45 aces, 150 digs and 45 blocks this season.
Le Guillou, a junior from Velizy-Villacoublay, France, produced 45 assists, 15 digs and two aces and averaged 7.50 assists per set. Against William Carey she produced her third assist-dig double-double of the season: 27 assists and 12 digs.
Torres, a libero from Jacksonville, Fla., and a graduate of Trinity Christian Academy and Florida State College at Jacksonville, was honored for the fourth time in the last five weeks. She produced 29 digs, one ace and only one error in 31 service receptions. She had double-figure digs in both matches, 16 against Bethel.
Torres has climbed to 13th on XULA's single-season digs list with 327 and ninth in digs per set with 3.63.
Seven Gold Nuggets have combined to win 17 of a possible 21 GCAC weekly awards this season. At least two from XULA have been honored weekly. Torres and Le Guillou have won four awards apiece in 2019, and Causevic has won two. Le Guillou has a XULA volleyball career-record 16 weekly awards.
This most recent weekly awards sweep is XULA's 14th in five seasons.
