LAKE CHARLES, La. — Freshmen
Steven Wilson and Brian Tarus were the fastest finishers for Xavier University of Louisiana's men
Saturday in the Lake Charles Toyota Cowboy Stampede cross country meet.
It was XULA's season opener — the Gold Rush missed
the first three scheduled meets because of Hurricane Ida — and the
collegiate debut of Wilson, who ran four miles in 24 minutes, 52.2
seconds to finish 52nd out of 60 runners.
Tarus — who enrolled at XULA in January
and competed in track and field that semester — was 53rd in 25:15.8.
Also competing for XULA were
Ahmad Wilson
(54th place, 25:20.0) and
Dayton Jamierson (59th, 28:22.6). The Gold Rush did not qualify for team scoring.
Four runners finished in less than 19 1/2 minutes, led
by Lamar's George Wheeler in 18:43.4 and teammate Harry Halford in 19:05.2.
Lamar, which had three of the four fastest finishers and four of the first nine,
outscored McNeese 32-44 to win the team title.
Next for XULA will be the Nicholls Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 2)
at Thibodaux, La. The women will run 5,000 meters starting at 8 a.m., followed by the men's four-mile race at 8:30.
