SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Xavier University of Louisiana women's track and field won 7-of-8 events Friday and grabbed a triple-digit lead in team scoring at the Red River Athletic Conference Championships.
The Gold Nuggets scored 153 points, 107 more than second-place Our Lady of the Lake. XULA seeks its second consecutive RRAC women's team championship and its ninth at the conference level in its last 10 attempts.
XULA's first-day points were 8 1/2 more than last year's runner-up, Wiley, scored in two days.
XULA got victories from
Kynnedy Turner in the 400-meter dash (56.54 seconds),
Skylah Barton in the 3,000 (11:44.14),
Emerald Carter in the 100 hurdles (13.85),
DaNya Horne in the hammer (34.40 meters/112 feet, 10 inches), and
Zoe Cordova in the triple jump (10.92 meters/35 feet, 10 inches). Also winning were Carter,
Ariel Ford,
Darryan Horton and Turner (46.61) in the 400 relay and Barton,
Hannah Stoutmire,
Fedjine Bell and Horton (10:15.00) in the 3,200 relay.
Horne, who placed second in the shot put, led all Gold Nuggets with 18 points. Next was
Elise Adams — second in the hammer, fourth in the shot put — with 13 points.
Carter, prteviously qualified for NAIA nationals in the 100 hurdles, produced a career-best time and won this event at the league level for the third consecutive season. Freshman
Kyla Coleman was second in 14.60, a B-qualifying time for nationals.
Another previously qualified Gold Nugget was
Kynnedy Turner, who lowered her A-mark in the 400 to 56.54. Turner won by 31-hundredths of a second over Huston-Tillotson's Jaymee Yelton.
Cordova repeated as triple jump champion. Ford was a member of a league-champion 400-relay team for the third consecutive year.
An early evening thunderstorm moved the javelin and 10,000-meter run to Saturday.
The meet's second and final day will begin at 9:30 a.m. CDT Saturday at Antonian High School's Ferrara Stadium.
