Awards recap
MARION, Ind. — Xavier University of Louisiana's women set a school relay record Friday and narrowly missed another relay record on the final day of NAIA outdoor track and field nationals.
The Gold Nuggets'
Hannah Stoutmire,
Nevaeh Lacey,
Jaelyn Mitchell and
Kynnedy Turner produced a record time of 45.69 seconds in the 400-meter relay, and their sixth-place finish earned each of them All-America awards.
Alexis Milton, Justyce Riggs, Raven Davis and Shalysa Wray set the previous XULA mark of 46.23 at the Southeastern Strawberry Relays in Hammond, La., on March 2, 2019.
About 3 1/2 hours later, Turner and Mitchell teamed with
Fedjine Bell and
Vanessa Oladapo to finish eighth in the 1,600 relay and earn All-America awards. Their time was 3:49.48, 18 hundredths of a second faster than in the prelims and 73 hundredths of a second from the school record set in 2019. This week's times rank 2-3 all on the Gold Nuggets' all-time list.
The top eight in each event were named All-America. That meant two awards apiece for Turner and Mitchell.
The Gold Nuggets scored five points to tie for 39th out of 114 women's teams. Sixty-eight teams scored. A year ago the XULA women scored seven points and tied for 37th.
Also Friday, XULA's
Elise Adams placed 30th in the discus with 38.02 meters/124 feet, 9 inches, and neither
Kahdijah Bailey nor
Leojai Hibbert cleared the opening height in the high jump.
